Blue Springs Education Foundation Honors Ted and Betty Meyer with Spotlight on Giving Award

Ted and Betty Meyer were honored with the Blue Springs Education Foundation’s (BSEF) Spotlight on Giving Award at the annual fundraising breakfast held March 1, 2016 at the Adams Pointe Conference Center.

To simply state that the Meyers have played an important part of supporting music education in the Blue Springs district would be an understatement. Both Ted and Betty were educators, and Betty began her career teaching music in the Blue Springs School District, while Ted taught business in the Kansas City School District. The two opened Meyer Music on March 5, 1966 to supplement their incomes. Eventually, they both left the classroom to work full time for the business, but education always remained Meyer Music’s foundation.

Fifty years later, it’s impossible to measure how many lives, passions and futures the Meyers have touched through their personal commitment to students in the Blue Springs School District and across the metro area. But this video gives you an idea of their 50 years and counting’s commitment…

The Meyer’s roots in the school district and the BSEF run deep, from attending school performances and giving lessons to thousands of children to bringing band members drinks at half time. Ted is a founding member of BSEF and Betty is involved with W.E.E. (Women Endowing
Education). Betty was the first of three generations to teach in the Blue Springs School District. Ted and Betty’s daughter, Julie (Meyer) Anwander, and two of their granddaughters, Madison Meyer and Meagan Anwander are educators in the district.

“Our parents received the Spotlight on Giving Award four days before Meyer Music’s official 50th anniversary. We can’t imagine a better way to kick off celebrating this milestone than to be honored at the Blue Springs Education Foundation’s breakfast,” says Mike Meyer. “My parents have always been advocates for music education and ‘making music makes you smarter’ became our motto. As teachers, music store owners, community members and parents, we are proud of the lasting impact our personal and business involvement has on Blue Springs School District’s students and staff.”

The BSEF’s mission is to enhance the excellent programs and instruction synonymous with the Blue Springs School District and provide assistance for student success in the K-12 student experience and beyond. All the funds raised at the annual breakfast are used to provide scholarships, support the W.E.E. Learning Bus, award meal assistance for students, assist students who are struggling in the classroom, and much more. In addition to being a BSEF founder, today Ted serves on the foundation’s board of directors.
